Pilgrims at the Varanasi ghats — the sacred destination at the end of the Delhi–Ayodhya–Kashi circuit

Delhi–Ayodhya–Kashi: The Complete North India Pilgrimage Circuit

From India's capital through Lord Rama's city to Lord Shiva's eternal home

The Delhi → Ayodhya → Kashi circuit is one of the most compelling travel routes in India: the national capital, Lord Rama's ancient birthplace, and Lord Shiva's eternal city — three distinct worlds within one journey. Since the Ram Mandir consecration in January 2024, this has become one of the most searched pilgrimage circuits in India, drawing both devout pilgrims and culturally curious travellers. This guide covers how to plan the circuit from Delhi, with transport options, day-by-day itinerary structures, and practical planning for each city.

Why Start from Delhi

Delhi is the most convenient hub for this circuit for travellers arriving from across India or internationally. From Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), there are direct flights to Lucknow (LKO, 1 hour) — and Ayodhya is 130 km from Lucknow — and to Varanasi (VNS, 1 hour). Delhi also has Vande Bharat Express connections to Varanasi (~8 hours) and regular fast trains to Lucknow (~3–4 hours).

For international visitors, Delhi is one of India's primary international gateways. Combining Delhi with this pilgrimage circuit allows visitors to experience the Mughal heritage of Old Delhi alongside Hindu sacred geography — a contrast many find historically illuminating.

For domestic travellers from Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, or South India, Delhi is a natural transit hub with excellent onward connectivity to both Ayodhya and Varanasi.

The 5-Day Structure (Recommended Minimum)

Day 1: Arrive Delhi. If time allows, visit Red Fort, Qutub Minar, or India Gate. Overnight Delhi.

Day 2: Delhi → Lucknow → Ayodhya. Morning Shatabdi/Vande Bharat from Delhi to Lucknow (3–4 hours) or 45-minute flight. From Lucknow, AC taxi to Ayodhya (~2 hours). Afternoon: Hanuman Garhi darshan (the traditional first stop before Ram Mandir). Evening: Saryu Ghat Aarti.

Day 3: Ayodhya. Early morning: Saryu Ghat bathing and sunrise puja. Morning: Ram Mandir darshan — arrive early for shorter queues. Kanak Bhawan and Ram Ki Paidi. Overnight Ayodhya.

Day 4: Ayodhya → Varanasi. Morning departure by train (~4–5 hours) or road (~3.5–5 hours). Arrive Varanasi by afternoon. Settle in. Evening: Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — one of the most spectacular ceremonies in India.

Day 5: Varanasi. Wake 4:30 AM. Sunrise boat ride on the Ganga — the defining Varanasi experience. Morning: Kashi Vishwanath Temple darshan. Old city walk. Departure evening or next morning.

The 7-Day Structure (Recommended for Depth)

Days 1–2: Delhi. One night minimum if Delhi is purely a transit point. Two nights allows Old Delhi, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, and Qutub Minar for those who want cultural context before the pilgrimage leg.

Days 3–4: Ayodhya (2 nights). Day 3 afternoon arrival, Saryu Ghat, Hanuman Garhi. Day 4: Ram Mandir darshan morning, Kanak Bhawan, afternoon walk through the old town lanes near the Saryu.

Days 5–7: Varanasi (3 nights). Day 5: arrive, evening Ganga Aarti. Day 6: sunrise boat ride, Kashi Vishwanath darshan, Sarnath afternoon trip (11 km from city centre). Day 7: old city heritage walk, southern temple circuit (Durga Temple, Sankat Mochan, Tulsi Manas Temple), final Ganga Aarti, departure.

This 7-day structure covers both cities at a pace that allows genuine absorption of the pilgrimage experience. Sarnath — the site where the Buddha gave his first sermon, 11 km from Varanasi — adds a Buddhist heritage dimension that many pilgrims find meaningful as a counterpoint to the Hindu circuit.

Transport Options from Delhi

Delhi to Ayodhya (via Lucknow):

By train: Shatabdi or Vande Bharat from Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) or New Delhi (NDLS) to Lucknow (~3–4 hours). Taxi from Lucknow railway station or airport to Ayodhya (~2 hours). Total: 5–6 hours door-to-door.

By flight: DEL to LKO (45 minutes). Taxi from Lucknow airport to Ayodhya (~2–2.5 hours). Total: ~4 hours. Efficient, especially in peak season.

Direct Delhi–Ayodhya Dham trains: Some services now run directly to Ayodhya Dham (AY) from Delhi — check IRCTC for current availability. Journey time approximately 7–9 hours.

Ayodhya to Varanasi: Train from Faizabad (FD): ~4–5 hours. Private car via NH27: ~3.5–5 hours.

Varanasi return to Delhi: Flight (1 hour, multiple daily — most efficient), or overnight Kashi Vishwanath Express (~12 hours, saves a hotel night).

Including Prayagraj: The Full Circuit

Prayagraj sits between Varanasi and Ayodhya — 120 km from Varanasi, 220 km from Ayodhya. Including the Triveni Sangam (the confluence of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati) adds 1–2 days to the circuit.

The Sangam at Prayagraj is one of the most sacred bathing sites in Hinduism. A ritual bath at the confluence is considered among the most meritorious acts in the tradition, and during Kumbh Mela years the site becomes one of the largest religious gatherings on earth.

With Prayagraj, the complete itinerary becomes: Delhi → Ayodhya (2 nights) → Varanasi (3 nights) → Prayagraj (1 night) → return to Delhi or fly home. Total: 7–8 days. This covers four of India's most historically and spiritually significant cities in one coherent journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this circuit only for Hindu pilgrims?

The circuit is primarily a Hindu pilgrimage route, but the historical and cultural dimensions make it genuinely interesting for non-Hindu travellers too. Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and the Ganga Aarti is attended by visitors of all backgrounds. Sarnath — included in the Varanasi leg — is a major global Buddhist heritage site. International visitors regularly make this circuit with cultural intent rather than religious devotion.

Can Spirit of Kashi help plan the Varanasi leg of this circuit?

Yes — Spirit of Kashi specialises in guiding the Varanasi portion of pilgrimage circuits.
